About the Campaign & Endowment
Your City. Your Symphony.
Your Kansas City community. It’s vibrant, creative and culturally rich. Your Kansas City Symphony creates the soundtracks of our community every day — in schools and on stage, in parks and on prairies.
Music for all of us.
Your Kansas City Symphony is proud to serve our community through music. Our education programs inspire the next generation by reaching tens of thousands of young people every year. Our Community Connections Initiative brings our musicians into area hospitals, nursing homes and even prisons to perform for those who need the joy of music most.
Performed by world-class musicians.
Your Kansas City Symphony attracts the best musicians in the business. Like you, they live and work here, and like you, they are committed to seeing this community grow. They are your neighbors, they teach your children and they enrich our city’s cultural life. They are the reason Kansas City has a great Symphony, and the future of our music depends on them … and on you.
Made possible by you.
Your generosity helps us touch the lives of more than one million people annually, provide over 100 free community events each year, and keep ticket costs affordable. Now, your support can reach across the years and secure great symphonic music for the future.
Make your gift to the Masterpiece Campaign today.
The Masterpiece Campaign is our drive to raise an additional $55 million for the Symphony’s endowment — a secure and stable source of funding on which we can rely year after year. Even with one of the highest sold-capacities in the nation, our ticket sales still only cover 30% of our budget. A stronger endowment will make it possible to continue growing and sharing great music with our great city.
We look to you to support the Masterpiece Campaign with a special one-time gift during this defining moment for your Symphony. By doing so, you will strengthen our endowment and secure our future.
An endowment fund is a permanent source of funding for the future. Endowment assets are invested. The Symphony draws a portion of its endowment fund earnings each year to support its operating costs, and any earnings in excess of this distribution are used to build the fund’s market value. This allows the endowment to grow and provide support for the Symphony in the future.
Because ticket revenue covers less than 30 percent of our annual budget, the Symphony relies heavily upon annual donations and endowment earnings to cover the remainder of our operating costs. Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, our annual fund has become one of the largest in the city. But as costs continue to rise, we need even more renewable, reliable income on which we can depend year after year. A more substantial endowment will provide us with that income, giving us the strength we need to sustain our excellence and continue serving the community well into the future.
The Symphony has achieved a high level of success in spite of the fact that our musicians make significantly less than their peers in comparable cities. Our continued artistic and organizational growth depends on our ability to attract and retain the highest caliber musicians. To remain competitive, we must raise our musicians’ salaries – a stronger, more robust endowment is key to making that possible.

Yes! As we approach the end of our campaign, we are counting on many small to mid-level gifts to help us reach our goal. Just as every note in a Beethoven symphony matters, every gift makes a difference in our campaign.
The Symphony is the musical engine for Kansas City. By securing the Symphony’s future, your donation will directly aid the Symphony in:
Serving our Community through Music
The Symphony reaches more than one million people annually through our extraordinary concerts, free community events, education programs, and broadcasts.
Creating a Positive Economic Impact
With a $22 million annual impact on our economy, the Symphony’s economic impact is substantial, supporting the equivalent of 443 full-time jobs and generating $1.7 million annually in state and local tax revenue. Additionally, cornerstone institutions such as the Symphony are vital to drawing tourists, potential residents, and new businesses to the region.
Inspiring Music Education
The Symphony aspires to make music available to every child in our region. More than 50,000 people are reached annually through our wide variety of educational programs, creating invaluable experiences to help students become community leaders.
Yes. Please continue to support the Symphony’s annual fund at your current level. Transferring your gift from the annual fund to the endowment will not be effective in creating a lasting legacy for our Symphony. Your support for both funds is vital. We ask that you please consider an additional one-time endowment gift to the Symphony along with your current annual support.
It is the intent of the Kansas City Symphony that donations to the Masterpiece Campaign are devoted to providing permanent endowment funding for the benefit of the Kansas City Symphony. Endowment gifts are invested at the Kansas City Symphony Foundation at UMB Bank and the Shirley Bush Helzberg Masterpiece Fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation.
